1. Mobile phone options in Austria

Before choosing, compare the total monthly cost, included data, EU roaming terms, network coverage where you actually live and work, minimum contract duration and any activation or hardware charges.

2. eSIM or physical SIM?

If your phone supports eSIM, it can reduce the need to wait for a physical card. A physical SIM is still useful if you regularly change phones or want a removable backup. Availability and identification requirements differ by provider, so check the provider’s current signup process.

3. Identification and registration

Austria has identification requirements for prepaid SIM activation. Do not buy a plan assuming it will work anonymously. Use the mobile provider’s official instructions and have an accepted identity document ready.

4. Home internet

For a flat or long-term room, check which technologies are actually available at the exact address before comparing headline speeds. Depending on the building and provider, service can use cable, DSL, fibre or a mobile network router.

Compare download and upload speed, minimum contract duration, installation timing, router charges, cancellation rules and whether the advertised speed is realistic for your address.

5. What to do when you move

Do not assume your existing home-internet contract can simply move to a new apartment. Ask the provider whether service is available at the new address and what happens to the contract if it is not. Keep written confirmation of any change or cancellation.
