FinanzOnline is the Austrian tax administration’s online service. Current BMF guidance says access can be made with ID Austria; credential-based access is another route and uses additional authentication. If you already have an active account, do not create a second initial registration.
What can you use FinanzOnline for?
It is the central digital channel for many personal tax matters: viewing tax information, submitting employee tax assessments or returns where applicable, receiving messages/decisions and managing parts of your tax account.
Login with ID Austria
The BMF states that ID Austria can be used to access FinanzOnline even if you have not previously used FinanzOnline. This is often the simplest route for people who already have a functioning ID Austria.
Registration with access credentials
The Finance Ministry also documents credential-based registration. Depending on whether your entered details match the tax authority’s records, activation information may be issued after verification. Some cases cannot use online initial registration and require handling through the tax office.
Forgotten password or locked access
The BMF provides reset procedures, including the FON 1 process in relevant cases. Use the current official page because authentication requirements have changed over time.
First-time newcomer checklist
- Confirm whether you already have FinanzOnline access before trying to register again.
- If you have ID Austria, test that route first.
- Keep your Austrian tax and identity details consistent with official records.
- Use the BMF English information for current registration steps.
